GATCHAMAN by FindingOx GATCHAMAN by FindingOx
Here's "Kagaku ninja tai Gatchaman" from 1972-1974. Though I knew it first as "Battle of the Planets" from 1978 on... Jog your memory here --> [link]

Really loved this as a little kid. I even had two plastic Mark (Ken) boomerangs but my Mom threw them away because she thought they were too dangerous :(

I was lucky enough to see the original Japanese version 1st series (full uncut 105 episodes) on DVD in 2004. Got all the original Japanese character names down :). Sad ending! The Gatchaman OVA from late 1990s was only so-so I remember, though I enjoyed the new outfits.

Referenced using a Japanese Gatchaman episode compendium book (given by my bro [link] one Xmas, thanks :)) and a BotP Guidebook.

100% Photoshop (the original is 2x larger)

NIce. :D The only version of Gatchaman I've seen was the "G Force" version. I'm hoping to see the uncut version one day.

Now why would your mom think plastic boomerangs were dangerous? =P

thanks!

well, because they were shaped just like Mark's/Ken's birdrang (perfect flat replica), so they had a sharp bird-tip up in front and sharp wing-tips/ends :)

I'm not very familiar with the show. I mostly know Gatchaman through Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Did each member specialize in a crtain aspect?

Like is one an explosives expert, stealth, artillery, etc?

oh yeah, if there's a show that started all the Japanese animations (and all the Ranger ones as well) with 5 team members, each with a different color uniforms, it's probably Gatchaman...

Hi! They are more differentiated by character and the equipment they use/carry... they are all "ninjas" so they are all very stealthy and martial-arts capable...

1- Ken/Mark - Eagle - the leader of the group, flies a single-prop plane, throws a dart-boomerang... obsessed with finding his father

2- Joe/Jason - Condor - the brooding, moody loner of the group, drives a race car, throws 'feather-darts' and uses a multi-function gun (cable, etc.)... challenges authority and decisions of Ken sometimes... loves the missile button on their main ship... if I remember correctly, he would love to avenge the death of his parents...

3- Jun/Princess - Swan - the female of the group, runs a bar/diner on her free time, drives a motorcycle, employs a yo-yo weapon mainly... if there is an explosive expert on the team it might be her... tries to raise Jinpei/Keyop as her little brother... has a love interest in Ken

4- Jinpei/Keyop - Swift/Swallow - the young kid of the group, he's often seen making fun of Jun and getting clobbered over the head or yelled at for that, heh. He employs a type of short manrikigusari (a chain or rope weap with weighted ends), and drives a sort of multi-terrain tank that flies, can go underwater, etc.

5- Ryu/Tiny - Owl - the big (and sometimes slow and clumsy) guy of the group, he's the team pilot on the main ship. He gets depressed on missions when he's told to stay back and guard the ship. He usually uses brute force in combat (acts kinds of like a wrestler) and rarely uses a weap (I think a few times they gave him a gun). Whatever he lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in heart and effort.

Hawkeye (Ken)
Mockingbird and Snowbird (Jun)
Killraven (Joe)
Falcon (Ryu)
and Howard the Duck (Jinpei)

I knew it as Battle of the Planets also and was obsessed with it as a kid. I even made my own wrist communicator. Good times, good memories. Its odd that I cannot find any comic books of it nor any DVDs now, and I had a comic book back in the 80s i dug up for a dollar in this bin at a flea market.

oh man, I did that, too! made the Gatch watches outta' paper, markers and tape! Just like kids playing Superman, I ran around with a towel tucked under my t-shirt collar as wings, back then, hehe!

the DVDs aren't available anymore? I also thought at one point they were making comicbooks (new) of it, no? I haven't been following it... I'll let you know if I see something

also, go to springie's page, if you haven't already, she's crazy about Gatchaman (you can probably ask her some questions about stuff, too) --> [link]

thx for the fave!

That's ok, I remember when it was on Cartoon Network (maybe I'm wrong though) it was heavily butchered. In the 70s, 'Battle of the Planets' was already a cut-down and edited version for violence (so the story changed), and they changed the character names, etc. Inside they also included animation snippets of a meaningless R2D2-copy robot and his robot dog to fill time. By the time they showed this series again (this is what I remember and maybe the version you saw), they changed the characters names again, to ridiculous ones, and they also included their own music, which one fan-site correctly described as being worse than Chinese water torture (it was just like meaningless rock instrumentals jamming continuously non-stop). It was absolutely unbearable to watch, so I understand.
